Holiday Makeup Tutorial: Gold Smoky Eye

my boring closet: style for the not so boring woman. holiday makeup tutorial: gold smokey eye

When it comes to makeup, I am pretty boring most days. Fitting, given the name of my blog, but every now and then I feel the need to do something different, try new products, and create a more glam look. The best night to try something out of the box? New Year’s Eve!

One thing I had been wanting to try was all-natural makeup. I recently met Kathryn, the owner of AILLEA beauty here in Denver, and I was curious to see if all-natural makeup held up just as well as the bigger brands.

I was blown away by how much I loved the products. I loved the beautifully pigmented shadows, the coverage from the foundation, even the sheen on the lip gloss. All of it reminded me of some of my favorite brands like MAC, Urban Decay, NARS, etc. Plus, it was fun to try something new!

So, today I am partnering with AILLEA and makeup artist Liz Wegrzyn to bring you a NYE glam makeup look featuring a gold smoky eye and two fun lip color options. You can shop all the products in store at AILLEA (they have two locations) or online!

Step 1: Ilia Foundation in “Gobi”

Usually, I opt for a tinted moisturizer, but for special events I like to wear something with a little more coverage and staying power. I like that this foundation is nice and light but evened my complexion flawlessly. Liz used a blending sponge to apply an even layer on my face. This product is buildable, too, so you can layer on for more coverage.

Step 2: RMS Un Cover-Up in “11”

I always need cover up under my eyes, and this one worked great! RMS is a brand created by celebrity makeup artist Rose-Marie Swift. Her story is very interesting and her line is hands-down one of my favorites sold at AILLEA! During the application process, we did add a bit of eye cream because my skin was so dry. If you notice your makeup starts to get a little cakey, try a little bit of eye cream to smooth it out. Liz also used a bit of the Vapour illusionist concealer under my eyes as well to create a bit of glow.

Step 3: RMS Tinted “Un” Powder in “0-1”

Talc free, silicone free, perfume free and paraben free powder to set the base.

Step 4: Fun Shadows!

Liz used several RMS shadows to create the gold smoky eye. First she started with the RMS eye polishin “solar” as a base for my lids. It’s a great creamy shadow in a golden bronze color. She then used the RMS swift shadows in 46, 76, and 97 to create a soft, golden, blended look.

Step 6: Ilia Pure Eyeliner in Sweet Jane

I literally never wear brown eyeliner, but this chocolate hue was the perfect complement to the gold shadows!

Step 7: EcoBrow Defining Wax in Sharon

I usually use a brow pencil, but I absolutely loved this wax! Not only did it fill in my brows beautifully, but the waxy texture made sure they stayed in place all day as well! Use an angled brow brush to apply.

Step 8: Blush

Then, she used the Kjaer Weis Cream Blush in “Blossoming” on my cheeks. Contrary to what I normally do, she didn’t apply the blush to the apples of my cheeks, but rather right on top of my cheekbones. I love how this looked! Have I been doing blush wrong my whole life?? (It’s possible.)

Step 9: Lashes

First, Liz used the Lily Lolo mascara in “black natural.” Then, she applied the false lashes. I’m not normally one to use false lashes, but this pair from Battington Lashes is next-level!! We went for the most dramatic pair, and I loved wearing them. They looked so long and fluffy, but felt completely comfortable on! Liz used black glue to apply the lashes. First, she cut the lashes to fit my lash line. Then, she applied a thin layer of glue to the lash strip. Next, she let the glue dry a bit until it was tacky. Then, she applied the strip to my eye. They lasted all day long and I felt like some kind of Disney princess in these babies!

Step 10: Lips

We had a hard time deciding between a nude lip or a red lip, so we did both! First, Liz used the Henne Organics lip balm because my lips were so dry (it was freezing in Denver!) For the nude option, we used the Vapour Siren Lipstick in “Possess” then applied the Evelyn Iona Natural + Organic Lip Glossin “Maple” on top. I love the nude lip option for a more toned down glam look.

However, if you’re looking for the Hollywood starlet look, you may want to try a bold red! For this look, Liz used the Lily Lolo Natural Lip Pencil in “Ruby Red” to line and fill in my lips. This makes a great base for your lipstick and keeps it from running throughout the evening. Next, we used the Kjaer Weis Lipstick in “Adore.” For the finishing touch, we used the Evelyn Iona Natural + Organic Lip Gloss in “Brooke.”

I’m seriously loving this whole all-natural makeup thing and I hope you are too! No matter what you do for New Year’s Eve this year, one of these two holiday makeup options is sure to wow at your holiday party! Let me know if you try it out :)
