The spring roll wrapper dumplings trend went viral on tik-tok thanks to Cooking With Ayeh. Being Gluten Free I never get to enjoy dumplings so was so excited to make my own version. While hers are vegan, this is a twist on the more traditional pork dumplings. These have quickly become a household favorite.
Dumpling Ingredients:
- 1/2 lb. ground pork
- 2 scallions, finely diced
- 1/2 egg, beaten
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 3/4 teaspoon sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon gluten-free Tamari soy sauce
- 1 teaspoon Red Boat fish sauce
- 1 teaspoon freshly chopped ginger
- Spring roll rice paper wraps
- Sesame oil (or cooking oil of your choice)
Dipping Sauce Ingredients:
- 2 teaspoons sugar
- 1 tablespoon hot water
- 2 tablespoons gluten-free Tamari soy sauce
- 1 1/2 teaspoons rice vinegar
- 1 teaspoon minced ginger
- 1-2 tablespoons diced scallions
How To:
Dipping Sauce Directions:
Dissolve the 2 teaspoons of sugar with the hot water.
Add all additional ingredients and mix (I shake mine in a jar) and serve.
Dumpling Prep:
Combine all ingredients (except for rice paper wraps and sesame oil) into a bowl and mix together using hands.
Use a teaspoon of cooking oil (I use sesame oil but any cooking oil will work) and cook the pork mixture on the stove.
Stir while cooking until the pork is thoroughly cooked.
Create your dumpling-making station:
Fill a bowl or pan with warm water.
Dip spring roll wrapper individually into the warm water until softened.
Lay wrapper on a flat surface and spoon 2 tablespoons of the cooked pork mixture; tuck edges and roll, similar to how you would roll an egg roll or burrito.
Set aside on a plate.
(NOTE: if spring roll wrappers are breaking, you can double wrap.)
Repeat process until all of the pork mixture is gone. Make certain as you plate the dumplings so that they do not touch as they will stick together.
Fry the Spring Rolls:
NOTE: If you want a healthier dumpling you can skip the frying and eat as a spring roll. You can also swap out the ground pork for ground chicken or ground turkey.
Heat enough sesame oil (or cooking oil of your choice) to coat the bottom of a pan on medium high in order to fry the spring roll dumplings.
Once the oil is heated, add dumplings to the pan but do not allow the dumplings to touch. Keep a close eye on the dumplings while they fry - until they brown, they are going to stick to the bottom of the pan.
Once they have browned, flip the dumpling to cook the alternate side.
Let cool, serve with the dipping sauce and enjoy!
